Worthing Thunder admit it is the real thing now as they launch their NBL Conference season.

Thunder host Sutton Pumas on Saturday anxious to make up for their only defeat this term, suffered away to the Surrey side a fortnight ago.

Coach Gary Smith admits he is desperate to finish in a position from which Thunder can enjoy play-off success, having finished sixth last season and missed out on a final four spot when losing to Solent on aggregate.

Smith said: "I want to get to the Championship final and beat Teesside.

"That's my goal. We've come through our Trophy group but to be honest we have been using that as our pre-season."

Thunder's top spot in the group, clinched with last weekend's wins over London United and Solent, sets them up for a home quarter-final a week on Saturday.

Gaylon Moore set a club record 28 rebounds in the win over United while experienced Phil Waghorn stepped in at crunch times of both wins and earned high marks.

Former Bear Mark Jackson was the main threat in Sunday's win at Solent, hitting 22 points.

Meanwhile, Steve McQueen also came up with a club best for Brighton Cougars.

The Canadian hit one of the longest three-pointers seen at the club in their 79-76 win over Thames Valley B.

Cougars trailed by two going into the final minute.

No such joy for Bognor Pirates, who lost 49-73 at home to Swindon Sonics.
