As everyone knows, the actor Richard Harris died last Friday, aged 72.

I remember, back in the Sixties, he was a member of a health club where I was his fitness trainer, in London's Mayfair.

This jaunty Irishman was usually cast as a rebel in films and often played out the same part in real life in his early days. For all that, he was a very nice guy.

In 1958, he acted in the film Alive And Kicking, followed by Shake Hands With The Devil in 1959.

He will be best remembered for his intense performance in This Sporting Life (1963) and as King Arthur in Camelot (1967). Latterly, of course, he appeared in Unforgiven (1992), Gladiator (2000) and his last role, Albus Dumbledore in the first two films of the Harry Potter series.

Harris's death follows that of another great actor who was also a member of the same health club, Rod Steiger. Harris was a keen member in those days but seemed to treat the club as a good laugh. At least he enjoyed himself.
