I note with interest the article on controlled parking (The Argus, October 27), whose banner headlines suggest the public will have their say on a residents' parking scheme.

Let's be clear - the people will definitely have their say but it will make no difference to the outcome.

The central Hove scheme was introduced against the wishes of businesses and residents. Now a scheme is to be introduced into Goldsmid ward with only a 5 per cent response to the "consultation", which was nothing more than an unattended map display.

It is time Brighton and Hove City Council came clean as to its intention.

If it wishes to introduce a citywide parking scheme, it should publish its intentions for that type of scheme and state it intends to roll it out ward by ward. Instead, it goes through a charade of consultation and then produces the scheme it wishes to introduce. You know the sort - "one size fits all".

The incremental approach adopted merely displaces vehicles into other areas, creating further congestion.

Goldsmid ward residents have experienced this and, in the end, conceded that the council would force through a scheme.

Make no mistake, the principle of charging residents for permits once introduced is like offering a blank cheque to the council. This year, £80 - and subsequent years? If council tax increases are anything to go by, people will find it very difficult to live in this Place To Be.
