The Collins Concise Dictionary gives the following definition of the word "promenade": "A public walk especially at a seaside resort; a leisurely walk especially one in a public place for pleasure or display."
Nowhere does it mention that a promenade is for the use of cyclists.
I must bring this to the attention of Worthing people, in particular the executive members on Worthing Borough Council.
They have decided, despite the option of a road-based cycle network, to once more allow cycling along the promenade.
It is not so long ago a pedestrian was seriously injured in a collision with a cyclist on the promenade.
Following this incident, the previous cycle path that ran along the promenade was closed and has remained so ever since.
I and thousands of other people, both residents and visitors alike, spend many a happy time strolling along the promenade unhindered by hordes of cyclists but it seems this pleasant pastime is to cease.
I must congratulate Councillor Tucker, who did not support a cycle path along the promenade. It seems, clearly, some members representing seafront wards realise the problems and dangers it will cause.
I am not anti-cyclist but the pavement, wherever it may be, is not the place for cyclists.
I hope the electorate will remember the decision the Liberal Democrat-controlled council has taken when next year's local elections are upon us.
-Coun Jason Smith, Heene ward, Worthing Borough Council
