Matt Ahmed scored the only goal as Crowborough beat Crawley 1-0 to go sixth in Kent/Sussex division one.

This was a second successive win for Phil Newington's side although they had to endure some intense pressure from the visitors in the closing stages.

The only goal came midway through the first half when Ahmed picked up possession on the left and drifted past a couple of Crawley defenders before drilling the ball into the bottom left-hand corner.

Crowborough should have made it 2-0 when Crawley's Chris Butterfield cleared off the line with his head but Darren Pullman struck a post with the resultant penalty stroke.

Crawley responded with new signing Andy Smythe hitting the side netting.

A short corner awarded for a foul on Terry Higgs was saved by the home goalkeeper but the save led to another short corner which was switched to Jamie Westwood whose shot went just wide.

There was no further scoring in the second half although Crawley finished strongly with Smythe at the heart of most moves.

He forced another good save on 60 minutes, then sent over a teasing cross which just eluded his team-mates and in the closing stages Higgs struck the last of a number of short corners only for it to be deflected over the bar.

Crawley skipper Higgs said: "We are not converting our possession into opportunities, which is why we are near the foot of the table. It is something we need to work on."

Eastbourne scraped a 2-1 win at rock bottom University of Kent thanks to goals from Angus Williams and 15-year-old Ben Rham.

South Saxons are still looking for their first win after losing 6-3 at home to Burnt Ash. For Saxons, Derek Smith scored twice and Danny Burnett also netted.
