The rusting Big Apple children's roller-coaster ride on Brighton seafront was today being repossessed as detractors branded it a "blot on the seascape".
The old ride at Peter Pan's Playground in Madeira Drive has been an ugly relic for several years.
The poor state of the ride, which is shaped like a giant apple, has angered neighbours and councillors.
They said it attracted people who lit fires, used drugs and slept in the derelict amusement.
Operators had submitted plans to revamp the structure but the rusty ride has now been taken back by Brighton and Hove City Council.
Contractors were today clearing debris to make it safer.
Local Labour councillors Gill Mitchell and Betsy Brewer said: "We are delighted things have moved so fast following our demands.
"We are now seeking urgent discussions on the future of this site in the context of other proposed developments for that part of the seafront, such as those at Black Rock.
"We are not convinced that just having more of the same 'end of the pier' type of amusements here is really sustainable and would prefer a quality development with perhaps a sporting focus.
"Whatever is decided, the free children's playground must be reinstated as soon as possible."
Dr Janie Thomas of the Kingscliffe Society said the apple was a "blot on the seascape".
