A Sussex man who became only the third Briton in space was today due to return to earth.

Piers Sellers, from Crowborough, is due to re-enter the earth's atmosphere on board the space shuttle Atlantis.

He has been on a 11-day Nasa mission with five other astronauts to continue construction on the international space station.

The 47-year-old followed in the space steps of Britons Helen Sharman and Michael Foale.

He has taken three spacewalks during the mission, describing the view from one of them as "too beautiful for words".

Members of Sellers's family including his wife Mandy, 46, and children Tom, 14, and Imogen, 17, are expected to be reunited with him after he lands at the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida at around 5pm UK time.
