Director of cricket Peter Moores will head up a new-look coaching set-up at Sussex.

He will retain his responsibilities for the first team, but a re-organised tier of management below him will enable Moores to play a more hands-on role in all other aspects of cricket development at Hove.

Keith Greenfield retains his responsiblity for the Academy, but Mark Robinson has been promoted to club coach and Steve Peyman becomes the county's first Development Director.

Chris Pickett will manage the new indoor school, which opens next month, while Chris Waller will look after the youth squads from under-10s through to the new under-21 team which replaces the under-19s and County Board teams which have been disbanded.

Robinson will still look after the second XI but he will have a bigger role to play with the first team alongside Moores and skipper Chris Adams.

Moores, who will have a four-year contract in his new role, said: "I didn't think I could have had the same responsibities with the first team within the new structure but the committee were adamant that I retained the same involvement.

"That has created opportunities for other people which is very exciting."

Moores found himself totally immersed in the first team's struggles to retain Division One status in the County Championship last season in the regular absence of injured skipper Chris Adams and his deputy James Kirtley who broke his hand on England duty.

Both will be fully fit for the start of the new campaign and that means extra responsiblities for Adams.

"I will set the team up as usual for each game in terms of preparation, practice and team selection, but on the morning of each game I will hand it over to Chris and he will put his own stamp on the team from there," added Moores.

"I still think a coach needs to be close to the first team, but it will also enable me to balance my role a bit more by observing players who are coming through the youth set-up into the second team and so on.

"It's a great opportunity for me and the other coaches on the staff and the new set-up will spread the load a bit more and will enable us to be a lot more flexible."

"But the common aim remains trying to get more youngsters like Matt Prior, James Kirtley and Robin Martin-Jenkins coming through the youth system."

Meanwhile, wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose and new fast bowler Shaun Rashid will be heading to South Africa in January to spend the second half of the winter at the cricket academy in Port Elizabeth where the coaching staff include the county's off-spinner Mark Davis.

Matt Prior is hoping to spend some time in the new year in Pakistan with Mushtaq Ahmed's National Bank team while all-rounder Carl Hopkinson is wintering in New Zealand playing club cricket.
