Almost 400 people reported being the victims of physical or verbal racial abuse in Brighton and Hove in the past year.

Most of the 394 who reported incidents between October 2001 and August this year were male.

Most were under 20, although those in the 30 to 39 age group were also more likely to be targeted.

The statistics are published in a report by the Brighton and Hove Racial Harassment Forum, headed by Safia Mohamud.

Of the 394, 62 were of Asian or Indian appearance while 63 were of white European appearance. Eighty-two were attacked in the street, 76 in their homes and 62 in shops.

The report showed most of the abuse was physical, although verbal abuse came a close second.

More people in the Hanover area reported being a victim of race crime than in any other area. Other hotspots were the Moulsecoomb and Marine council wards.

A spokesman for Brighton and Hove City Council said: "The report shows people are more confident to report what's happening to them. People are not putting up with it."
