Environment chiefs should do more to protect vulnerable parts of Lewes from a repeat of devastating floods, it has been claimed.
Lewes District Council said flood defence proposals should be changed to give Cliffe and the area west of the town centre more protection.
The council wants more money for defences in vulnerable parts of Landport, North Malling, Malling Deanery and rural areas of the Ouse Valley.
Council leader Ann De Vecchi said river walls should be raised south of Phoenix Causeway.
She said: "The additional height in Cliffe would be only between 30cm and 50cm but would give a huge extra measure of protection.
"The additional expenditure represents excellent value for money compared to the consequences of a future flood."
Lewes was severely flooded in October 2000. Much of the town, including the Cliffe area, was devastated.
