Green Party councillor Keith Taylor has called on Brighton and Hove council to apologise for problems during Fatboy Slim's beach party.

More than 250,000 people crowded on to Brighton beach during the July event, causing crowd-control difficulties.

The party was discussed yesterday at a meeting of the council's policy and resources committee.

Members considered a detailed report which said lessons would have to be learned.

Councillor Taylor said mistakes were made by the council, including not having enough stewards for the event.

He added: "I call on the council leader Ken Bodfish to issue a public apology to the people for the distress and damage caused through its negligence."

But Coun Bodfish said he was fed up with the killjoy attitude of the Green Party and added: "Most people said it was a very good event."

Labour councillor Andy Durr said the clear-up of glass from the beach had been quick and efficient.

Culture councillor Ian Duncan said fewer people received cut feet on Brighton beach this summer than in a normal season, despite the event.

Tory opposition leader Brian Oxley repeated his call for an inquiry into the evening and said the council should learn from it about how to handle other big events.
