John Maggs was thrilled with the spirit shown by his ten-man Horsham side who overcame Slade Green 3-0 at Queen Street to book their place in the second qualifying round.

Defender John Kirby was dismissed midway through the first half for a professional foul, but, instead of sitting on the 1-0 lead given to them by Rob Collins, Hornets improved on it with two goals in the second half.

Maggs said: "The sending off was unfortunate but we played really well after that. For the last half hour you would have thought we had the extra man."

Geddes, whose clever work had set up Collins for the opener, was twice denied by visitors' goalkeeper Paul Vines before Lee Carney made it 2-0 from the spot after a foul on Gary Charman.

Charman nodded in the third and Geddes was denied the goal he deserved by the woodwork in injury time.

David Birmingham scored twice in the second half as Bognor came from behind to beat Windsor and Eton 4-1 at Nyewood Lane and repeat their league success on the opening day of the season.

The hosts trailed after 21 minutes when Craig O'Connor netted from the penalty spot after he had been sent sprawling by Rocks goalkeeper Craig Stoner, who was sold short by a weak back pass by Jody Rowland.

But the outcome was never in doubt after David Birmingham fired home the equaliser in the 49th minute from a cross by Guy Rutherford.

Rutherford turned goalscorer after a Matt Russell flick had set up the chance 14 minutes later and it was 3-1 on 74 minutes when Richard Hudson converted the second penalty of the contest after Rowland had been brought down.

Birmingham completed the scoring in injury time following more good work by Rutherford.

Bognor boss Jack Pearce said: "We were awful in the first half and the only bit of luck we had was that Craig was not sent off, but once we scored we got better and better and could have won more easily in the end."

In contrast to Bognor, Eastbourne Borough did all their good work in the first half as they made short work of Wessex League leaders AFC Newbury at Priory Lane.

Borough led 4-0 at half-time and eventually won 6-2, but boss Garry Wilson admitted his side had got sloppy in the second period.

He said: "It was too comfortable and in the second half we did not switch on until they had scored two goals.

To be honest, I thought they would have given us a better game."

Dave Adams followed up his two-goal performance in midweek with another brace while John Westcott and Scott Ramsay were on target as Borough netted three times in five minutes just before the break.

Yashwa Romeo and an 82nd-minute penalty by James Caswell gave Newbury hope before John Price and Ben Austin scored in the last five minutes for the hosts.

Lewes made hard work of beating another Wessex League outfit as they scraped through 2-1 against Brockenhurst.

It looked like being a comfortable afternoon for the Rooks who were 2-0 up after 18 minutes. Brockenhurst defender Dave Knighton turned a cross from Julian Curnow into his own net before Lee Newman applied a smart finish from close range.

But Chris Marwood missed a first-half penalty for Brockenhurst who made life uncomfortable for the home fans when Richard Glenister halved the deficit in the 50th minute.

Lewes boss Jimmy Quinn said: "We should have scored a lot more in the first half because they were a very poor side, but we ended up making things difficult for ourselves when they should not have been."

Quinn singled out the contribution of midfielder Gareth Green. He said: "Gareth was the only player who put it in for 90 minutes."
