Like everybody else in Brighton and Hove, we received a notification from the council that, from July 29, our rubbish collection date would be changed, in our case, from Tuesday to Friday.

Friday duly came, unlike the rubbish lorry. No whisper from the council, neither of apology nor when we could expect the collection to be made.

Finally, on Wednesday morning, three working days later, the mounds have finally disappeared.

Meanwhile I and many of my fellow citizens, had polluted the atmosphere still further by carting our rubbish to the dump rather than find the local animal population had made more attacks on the sacks and scattered their contents again.

Aware that officials, with their undying love for cliches, would no doubt talk about "early days" and "teething troubles", inquiries directed to those in the know revealed the targets set are far too ambitious and there is no way in which the new day's work could, in fact, be completed in a day.

From the evidence so far, it appears to take 1.6 days. Moreover, it is said the council has reduced the number of lorries in a cost-cutting exercise.

What a load of rubbish.

Will someone please come clean, are we to go back to a weekly collection or is it, in future, to be every eight working days - or more?
