BT has announced a huge increase in the number of internet phone boxes, from 500 now to 28,000 within five years.

The company said it was pleased with the popularity of the e-payphones and predicted a growth in demand.

The kiosks allow customers to surf the internet, send emails, text message mobile phones and make standard phone calls.

BT said there would be 3,000 kiosks in place in a year and 28,000 in five years.

The popularity of mobile phones has led to a 40 per cent drop in the number of calls made at BT phone boxes over the last three years.
