If I had one word to sum up Sean Lock's performance, it would be "disappointing".

Lock is one of the UK's top stand-ups. He has been nominated for the Perrier and won best live stand-up at the British Comedy Awards in 2000.

I have seen him quite a few times and have had aching ribs for days so the prospect of seeing his all-new Edinburgh show had me salivating. But on Friday, it just didn't click for him.

The material was good and showed off all his trademarks - the shaggy-dog stories, the hyperactive imagination and surreal imagery - but he gave his normally spot-on delivery and performance skills the night off.

Bear in mind an under par Lock is still funnier than most other stand-ups.

His routines about his nan's surreal death were great but were delivered in a lacklustre style.

There were still plenty of good laughs but I couldn't help thinking we were watching a man going through the motions.

It seemed to me he'd had a really bad day, was in a foul mood and never really tried to turn it around.

But a comic of his stature and experience should be able to put even the worst day behind him.

It just goes to show it can happen to the best of us.
