It should be comforting to know Brighton and Hove City Council's environmental services exist for the safety and comfort of everyone.

It is sad the department is failing to put a stop to the increasing menace of noise. Brighton and Hove is overwhelmed by unwanted sounds - over-loud motorcycles and stereos blaring from vehicles, to mention only two sources.

The police say "our hands are tied" regarding the latter. The Ministry of Transport should ask the Home Secretary to urge the Government to pass a law banning loud music from vehicles with open windows.

The real purport of this letter is to lay blame on environmental services for allowing over-amplified music at Party In The Park and so on.

The number of people gathered at the last "party" was ridiculous. The level of volume was insane. Those who organise these events should be told by environmental services that excess volume is not only unnecessary but also unhealthy.

Over-amplified music has also been emanating from Churchill Square recently.

It was ghastly and so is the "music" blocking Debenhams' doorway in the square. An official told me people had complained but the volume has not been reduced.

Over-loud music is no longer music. Though I hate earplugs, it seems as if they will become a way of life for me until the end of my life.
