Seen here in a scene from Raffles (1939), with David Niven, is Dame May Whitty, another famous British export to Hollywood.

Remember her as the indomitable Miss Fry in the Hitchcock classic The Lady Vanishes (1938), with Margaret Lockwood and Michael Redgrave?

After a sterling stage career, Dame May made her first Hollywood film at the age of 72. She was twice nominated for Academy Awards.

They were for her performances in Night Must Fall (1937) and Mrs Miniver (1942).

Made a dame in 1918, Dame May stayed in Hollywood for the last years of her life, a pleasant and - I am sure - very gracious lady.
