Albion's star defender Danny Cullip could rejoin former manager Micky Adams at Leicester.

Adams is keen to sign Cullip for the FOURTH time, but he cannot make a move for the Seagulls' skipper yet because of financial constraints.

Adams must sell again before he can buy and has had to put a bid in the region of £500,000 on hold until he further reduces the Foxes' wage bill.

Albion admitted today they are aware of interest in Cullip and that he has not yet accepted a revised contract offer.

Cullip has been on the transfer list at his own request since November. The 25-year-old stopper has played a major part in Albion's successive title triumphs since Adams snapped him up from Brentford in October 1999 for £50,000.

His no-nonsense style of defending and commitment to the cause has won him plaudits from fans and fellow pros.

Supporters named him player-of-the-season in 1999-2000 as Albion lifted the Third Division crown.

Cullip was outstanding again last season, when the Seagulls claimed consecutive championships.

Former boss Peter Taylor handed him the captaincy after Paul Rogers and Charlie Oatway lost their places and he was included in the Professional Footballers' Association's Division Two team of the year.

Albion are desperate to hold onto Cullip. Simon Morgan, his regular partner last season, has retired and if he leaves the Seagulls would not have an established centre half on their books.

Chief executive Martin Perry said today: "The situation is as it has always been. Danny asked to go on the transfer list, so he is transfer listed.

"There is a revised deal for Danny on the table. It hasn't been accepted yet, but the club's position is that we respect him enormously as a great player who has done us a great service and we would like to keep him. We have not had a direct approach for him from any other club, but we are aware that there is interest in him."

Adams also signed Cullip when he was in charge at Fulham and Brentford. He wants him to stiffen a defence which suffered last season as Leicester were relegated from the Premiership.

Adams has already sold Robbie Savage and Gary Rowett to Birmingham and Charlton respectively for fees totalling £6 million. Leicester's Turkish midfielder Muzzy Izzet is also poised for a big money move, possibly to Middlesbrough.
