I am not reassured by Martin Walker. Can South Central tell me how I am to plan my summer holiday? A friend and I have booked ferry tickets for a fortnight's cycle tour of Brittany and need to travel from Worthing station, arriving at Portsmouth ferry terminal not later than 7.30 on a Thursday evening.

Until the introduction of the new trains, this would have been a simple one-hour journey. There would have been ample space for our two bikes - even if between four and six other bikes were already on board - and still space for one or two wheelchairs, pushchairs, suitcases and other bulky luggage.

On the proposed new trains, however, there is only space for two bikes or one wheelchair. Can we be sure, when we board at Worthing, that a wheelchair is not already on the train or a bike? What happens if we board without trouble at Worthing but a wheelchair-user subsequently needs the space at Chichester? Will we be thrown off the train?

Can South Central tell me how on earth we can plan our journey? There is no booking system for this space. Will we have to allow five or six hours for this one-hour journey, just in case we have to get off and wait for the next train at several points along the journey?

This is clearly ludicrous. Why is South Central trains treating passenger with bicycles or wheelchairs in such a shoddy way?
