Two children were seriously injured when the car they were travelling in was involved in a head-on smash.
The youngsters, aged five and ten, were in the back of a Renault Kangoo when it was in a collision with a Vauxhall Carlton on the A269 at Hazards Green, near Ninfield.
Police believe the driver of the Renault had attempted to overtake a motor caravan shortly before the incident.
Firefighters from Bexhill were called in to free one of the drivers with special cutting equipment.
Police are appealing for witnesses.
