There's a varied selection of club gigs throughout May.

Star trumpeter Ian Hamer will keep things bubbling when his quintet performs its popular night of Miles Davis classics at the Sussex Arts Club on Tuesday.

Added to major players such as Spike Wells and Adrian Kendon, Hamer has pianist Joss Peach guesting, with the sax role taken by new US attraction John Starks. Starks is a powerful Californian tenor saxist with strong Wayne Shorter leanings and should be well worth hearing.

The roving club programme takes place at the Sallis Benney Theatre on successive Saturdays and will be showcasing many of the UK's most imaginative musicians.

Saturday brings bassist Alec Dankworth's trio, with saxophonist Julian Arguelles and guitarist Phil Robson.

US reed wizard Michael Moore appears with Alex Maguire on May 18, and bassist Arnie Somogyi's quintet highlights his Hungarian roots on May 25.

A return to the Arts Club on May 31, brings famed guitarist Jim Mullen's organ trio with Jim Watson and Matt Skelton.

Tuesday's successful Harlequin nights continue with the trio of Terry Seabrook, Paul Whitten and Spike Wells.

Guests include Simon Haysom (May 1 and 29) Bobby Wellins (May 8) Gary Kavanagh (May 15) and Geoff Simkins (May 22).

On Thursdays, there's the great Mark Edwards Trio plus guests at The Prince Albert and Lawrence Jones's lively nights at The Lion And Lobster - he's also there on Sunday afternoons.

Komedia has a couple of specials, with US vocalist Joe Lee Wilson's Joy Of Jazz on May 21, and guitarist Antonio Forcione appearing on May 3.
