A unique glimpse into Brighton and Hove Albion's past has emerged.

Just days after the club marked the Division Two championship in front of adoring fans, players and supporters are already looking forward to next season in Division One.

This anticipation has been dampened slightly by the departure of boss Peter Taylor this week.

But these glimpses back through time reveal a very different world of football, when successes were celebrated in a somewhat more sedate style.

The set of early 20th Century postcards was discovered in an album which had been tucked away in an attic for decades.

They include crowd scenes of packed terraces at the former Goldstone Ground and a card autographed by former Albion player Jack Haworth.

The cards show the full Albion squads for the three seasons from 1908 and includes the Football Association Charity Shield-winning side of 1911.

The club also won the Southern League Shield and the Southern Charity Cup that year.

One of the crowd scenes was taken at Albion's home game against Watford on December 6, 1919, which the Seagulls won 3-2.

The other was taken two years later when the Albion played Swindon Town at the Goldstone.

The postcards were discovered by Hove policeman Chris Knox who had been asked to help clear the attic of a family friend.

He said: "She is an elderly lady in her 80s who lives in Petworth and wanted to have a bit of a clear out.

"She knows that my wife Rosemary and I collect old postcards of Petworth.

"She said we could have any of the cards from her collection.

"There were 620 cards in all and, as I was going through the album, I discovered the six Albion postcards.

"I spent a lot of Saturdays on duty in front of the North Stand at the Goldstone but I have to confess I am not a football fan at all.

"I did think, though, that Albion fans would be interested in seeing a bit of the team's history as they have just won promotion to Division One.

"They are obviously rare and if any Albion collectors are interested they are available for sale. The money will go to the original owner."

Chris, 50, has his own collection of more than 800 postcards of Petworth, where his wife grew up.
