Seagulls failed to make the top ten list of birds visiting Sussex gardens this year.

Almost 10,000 people in East and West Sussex spent an hour in their gardens or parks logging the number of feathered friends who visited.

The results of the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch were announced today and revealed the top honours were shared between starlings and house sparrows.

Starlings came out on top in East Sussex and the sparrows flew away with the title in West Sussex.

However, the number of robins spotted during the January event fell compared with the previous year's tally.

The top ten most common birds in East Sussex were: Starling, house sparrow, blue tit, blackbird, greenfinch, chaffinch, collared dove, great tit, robin and woodpigeon.

In West Sussex, they were: House sparrow, starling, blue tit, blackbird, greenfinch, wood pigeon, collared dove, chaffinch, great tit and robin.
