We have been asked by the family of the 14-year-old boy involved in the police dog attack on April 6, 2002, to issue a brief statement following reports in The Argus of the injuries sustained.

In the attack, the boy, who is a dog-lover and who has been brought up with German shepherd dogs, had the whole of his right ear torn off, save for a small part of the ear lobe.

He also sustained an injury to his right shoulder.

The child underwent micro-surgery lasting six-and-a-half hours on April 6 to re-attach the ear. The prognosis is not yet known, although the boy's condition is stable.

The family has been very concerned to learn that Sussex Police were using this dog to patrol the streets of Brighton. They urge Sussex Police and police forces across the country to take a responsible approach to public safety and to immediately remove any dogs from the force who show any signs of unpredictability in the future.
