Firefighters were called to free a man who had trapped his genitals inside a metal ring.
Staff at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, had tried to use their ring cutters on the steel sex aid but the blades had simply snapped.
Fire officers were called in at 11.30pm yesterday and used a pair of two-man hydraulic jaws to cut carefully through the metal in the eye-watering operation.
Sub-officer Mick Collins said: "He was trying to be very chatty to cover up his embarrassment but he must have walked in to to the hospital like John Wayne."
