One cinema not mentioned (The Argus Weekend, April 13) was the Pavilion (bughutch) in North Street, Portslade.
My husband and I used to go there regularly when we were courting. One evening (some time in the late Forties), the electricity failed during a performance.
An usherette (Lilian Eager?) stood in a spotlight from a torch and sang unaccompanied. I was so impressed, I can still remember what she sang.
It was called At The Balalaika and it was lovely. I will never forget such a magical moment.
