Police dog Bruce may be gone but he will never be forgotten by his handler and other animals lovers.
The German shepherd, who was put down after he failed a safety test, will be remembered in a memorial at the bottom of PC Peter Tattum's garden in Seaford.
It will be a fitting tribute to the dog whose harsh fate touched the hearts of many readers last week.
And it will show Sussex Police they really should have given him to a loving home rather than have him executed.
Assistant Chief Constable Nigel Yeo has since apologised for describing Bruce as a piece of equipment.
He was trying to make the point that Bruce was a serving police dog but it was singularly tactless when people were upset over the animal's death.
The death of a police dog may seem small to many top officers when they are dealing with serious crime, murders and civil disorder. But it was important to many ordinary people and they should take note of that.
