Bognor's Rox music festival is back under starter's orders after naming Fontwell Park racecourse as its new venue.

Organisers of the event had to scrap plans to stage the event on Bognor seafront after complaints it had become too big.

But yesterday Rox founder Steve Goodheart announced his team had signed a deal with nearby Fontwell Park racecourse which would host the event on August 17 and 18.

Music fans were told admission to the festival would remain free and talks with travel companies were taking place about shuttle bus services from the nearest railway station, Barnham.

Rox was launched as a few hours of free music on Bognor seafront but has steadily grown into a weekend event featuring dozens of bands and solo performers.

Last summer more than 60,000 people packed the promenade to listen to live music and visit a fringe event featuring artists, poets and individual performers.

But seafront traders complained their attractions had been put out of business by the crowds.

Announcing the move to Fontwell Park Mr Goodheart said: "Rox has outgrown its original location and the relocation to Fontwell Park will enable us to deliver a safe and controllable event."

Fontwell Park chief executive Jonathan Garrett said the event had been taken on at short notice and talks were still taking place to ensure Rox did not cause problems for people living near the racecourse.

He added: "It is a chance to dip our toe in the water and see how different types of events can be run."
