A pensioner is calling for action to stop yobs smashing his windows with stones hurled from a railway track.

For the past five years, Granville Hyett, of Amherst Crescent, Hove, has been persecuted by youths hurling stones, rocks and boulders at his home from the nearby Brighton to Worthing railway line.

His greenhouse has been smashed, causing damage costing £500, and in the latest attack his patio door was shattered.

Mr Hyett, a retired chef, said: "I live on the corner at Amherst Crescent and the railway line is opposite my house.

"At night, the stones come flying over from the railway line and hit my house and my neighbours' house. The people next door have had to replace 60 panes of glass in two years.

"The other night about six rocks came over and smashed my patio door to pieces. It's an absolute mess.

"I don't think it is children because it happens late at night, after 11.30pm.

"I think it is yobbos who get off the train at Arlington after drinking, or are on drugs.

"It is going on all the time now and it is very worrying."

The 80-year-old grandfather has been trying to get something done about the stone-throwing for five years.

But his attempts have been frustrated.

He said: "We have been on to the police and the transport police but nothing ever gets done.

"In December they said they were going to put CCTV cameras up there but that never happened.

"It is getting out of hand now and something has got to be done. They need a guard up there or a big fence to stop them getting down to the railway to get the stones. It must be quite dangerous for them after all.

"This is causing me a lot of grief and worry which I could do without at my age. It must have cost my insurance company a fortune over the years though sometimes it is not even worth claiming for a couple of panes of glass."

British Transport Police are investigating the incidents.

A spokesman said they would collect evidence to find out who the culprits were, then, in conjunction with Railtrack, take steps to prosecute them.
