Demonstrators outside Brighton police station today protested at the killing of police dog Bruce.
A dozen women, children and one dog gathered as flowers were laid outside the John Street building in memory of the five-year-old German shepherd.
Protesters shouted: "Shame on Sussex Police" and "Yeo should go" in reference to Assistant Chief Constable Nigel Yeo, whose decision it was to destroy the dog.
Susan Baumgardt, from Hove, said: "Officers involved in a fatal shooting in Hastings were promoted, but poor Bruce was killed just for doing his duty. It is disgusting."
Ann Baskerville, from Petworth, said: "I am appalled that the police described Bruce as just a piece of equipment.
"That dog was a sentient being and should have been given a second chance.
"What sort of message does this send to the people of this county?"
Marianna Macari, aged eight, from Hove, said: "I'm here today because the police murdered that dog, when all he was doing was trying to do his best. I feel sorry for him."
Her mother Gloria said: "It is disgusting. That dog had devoted its life to protecting its handler and helping people."
