A woman who slipped on a bunch of grapes in a supermarket says she wants compensation for six months of agony.

Hilary Ashley, of South Street, Lancing, says she fractured her leg in three places after slipping on the fruit while shopping at Asda in Hollingbury, Brighton.

Her leg was in plaster for three months and she has been readmitted to hospital several times with complications.

Asda says it is satisfied its cleaning policy was operating effectively on the day in question and has offered the 50-year-old £125 in gift vouchers as a goodwill gesture.

But Mrs Ashley says the store has a moral responsibility to compensate her further.

She said: "I have had to put up with six months of hell and pain already and I do not know when the pain will stop.

"I had a genuine accident in their store and I feel their offer is a bit of an insult. I don't know what would be adequate but given what I've been through it would be more than £125."

Before the accident Mrs Ashley, who is registered disabled after suffering polio as a child, had to walk with a stick.

Emma King, a spokeswoman for Asda, said: "We have not accepted liability on this occasion because we have documentation which shows our cleaning rotas were correctly ticked off every 30 minutes that day.

"We operate a 'clean as you go' policy. All of our colleagues are trained to clear up spills as soon as they happen. We also have an in-store janitor who patrols the aisles looking for spillages.

"It was a very unfortunate accident and if Mrs Ashley wants to get in touch the door will always be open."
