Mayur Majithia fought through the pain barrier to become the surprise new Sussex champion.

Despite suffering from a wrist injury, he battled through to the final at the Six Villages Sports Centre, Fontwell, where he beat Peter Bartam 11-7, 11-8, 4-11 11-9.

It is the first time Majithia, 28 from Crawley, has won the title.

Majithia said: "I was fortunate. The draw opened up for me when Peter Bartram beat Ritchie Venner in the semi-finals.

"The day before the tournament, after cortisone treatment, I honestly thought I had no chance of playing, let alone winning the county title."

Majithia, the reigning Guildford champion and the 2001 Crawley champion, added: "My problems with my playing wrist have lasted over two years.

"I just have to play on and hope the pain will not be bad enough to make me pull out in the middle of a match."

After his defeat by Bartram in the semi finals, Venner said: "Peter Bartram and Mayur Majithia were both in great form. I have not been playing at my best in recent weeks."

Meanwhile, in the women's singles tournament there were few surprises.

Rose Rainton (Bexhill) won her sixth title, defeating Sara Coggon (Hastings) in the final 12-10, 11-7, 11-5.

Rose defeated veteran international Sheila King (Hastings) in the first semi-final. Two of the two younger players clashed in the second semi-final, Coggon beat Sarah Stedman (Arundel) 11-9, 11-7, 10-12, 11-7.

The Sussex junior title was retained by Worthing's Gary Wilson. The new Sussex under-17 junior girls winner is Lisa Standen, 12, from Hastings.
