Offices may be built on the site of old allotments in Old Shoreham Road to meet a need for commercial space.

The Eastbrook allotments on the borders of Brighton and Hove have been identified for partial development by the Brighton and Hove Economic Partnership.

Its draft sub-regional strategy was being discussed during a conference at the Hilton Brighton Metropole yesterday.

Many of the allotments off Old Shoreham Road are not being used.

About three quarters of the four-hectare site could be used for a new business park if planning permission is granted.

Councillor Don Turner, who represents South Portslade, said talks were being held with allotment representatives.

He said the site was unsuitable for housing because it was under the shadow of electricity pylons but might have business potential.

The allotments are owned by Brighton and Hove City Council but are in the Adur district.

Another site being considered for development is Intek House, south of the railway line near Conway Street.

It is currently on the market for £850,000 and could provide much-needed low rental offices.
