Brighton and Hove Bus and Coach Company has done its best to reduce robberies and attacks on staff, even installing closed circuit TV on buses.
Despite that, drivers have been understandably concerned by a series of three robberies.
Some of them are asking for security screens of the kind that have been installed in some London and provincial city buses.
They have even threatened to withdraw their labour from evening and late-night buses on security grounds.
Their concern is understandable. Being robbed while at work is an unpleasant experience for anyone.
But the trouble with screens is they are also a barrier between drivers and passengers, making cabs claustrophobic places.
It's far better, if possible, to concentrate on catching those responsible rather than resorting to screens.
This series of robberies could be down to a small group of thieves. Extra police may lead to their arrest or deter them from further attacks.
