Brighton restaurant owners Sue and Pietro Addis have tasted success as racehorse owners for the first time.

Donatello Primo, named after their Brighton restaurant, won its first race on the all-weather track at Southwell this week at odds of 5-2.

Sue revealed she had put a bet on the winner, but refused to reveal how much.

Unfortunately, neither Sue or Pietro were at Southwell to witness their victory but they are anxiously awaiting video footage and photographs of their horse's success.

A delighted Sue said: "As a family we are very excited and passionate about horse racing and we are over the moon at having our first winner.

"But it was very sad that we weren't there to see him win his first race."

The Addis family bought the three-year-old 12 months ago for 13,000 guineas with help from local trainer Gary Moore and Brighton racecourse manager Phil Bell.

It was Pietro's dream to have the horse trained by top Newmarket handler and fellow Italian Luca Cumani.

He advised them that the horse would be better suited to all weather racing and recommended current trainer Ray Guest.

According to Bell, the Addis family are one of Brighton racecourse's best supporters and, for the past two years, have sponsored the four-race lady riders series and ladies day at the course.

Mr Bell said: "This racecourse has suffered in the past because local businesses have failed to support us, which is why we need people like Sue and Pietro who are one of our best corporate supporters."

Donetello Primo's trainer Guest has 45 horses in his stables and is enjoying considerable success with his all-weather horses, having had four winners from his last five rides.

He said: "We are very pleased with the horse and hope to run him on the all weather at Lingfield in the near future."
