Guests had to be evacuated from a backpackers' hostel after a fire broke out.

Ten people fled the Travellers' Rest in Middle Street, Brighton, after the blaze started in a boiler on the first floor of the three-storey building.

Firefighters from Preston Circus station found the fire had spread into the gap between the ceiling of the ground floor shortly after 8.50pm on Saturday.

A spokesman said: "There was a fair amount of damage to the ground floor and we had to remove some of the ceiling."
