Detectives have launched a Europe-wide search after a suspected rapist who speaks several languages went on the run.

Interpol have been alerted to Mark Gunston, 47, who is wanted in connection with an alleged rape in Putney, south-west London, on Sunday.

Gunston has connections in the Brighton area and police are warning people to be on the look-out.

Scotland Yard detectives said he was "an intelligent and convincing person" who speaks German, Polish, Serbo-Croat and possibly several other east-European languages.

UK ports have been alerted and he may be using the alias Ian Kennedy.

Detective Chief Inspector Dick Wolfenden said: "We wish to speak to him regarding a serious allegation made against him.

"We have made extensive efforts to trace him but have not succeeded.

"He is potentially dangerous and we would urge members of the public who may see him or suspect they know his whereabouts to contact police immediately. He should not be approached or confronted."

Detectives believe Gunston, who has lived in Putney for the past two years, may still be in London but he also has connections in the Cheshire and Manchester areas.

He is known to travel on trains and associate with lorry drivers.

Gunston is described as white, 5ft 2in with a large beer belly.
