The number of skate parks in Brighton and Hove is likely to be doubled from five to ten.

The city council is working with community groups to raise funds for the parks, which could cost between £25,000 and £150,000.

Possible sites include Saltdean Oval, Hove Lagoon, and Hangleton Park.

The council hopes to find a site in Portslade and another to replace the one at Black Rock.

It also wants to help groups raise money to improve existing skate parks at the Level, Woodingdean recreation ground, Knoll recreation ground and Preston Park.

Lead councillor for recreation Mike Middleton said: "We might also need something in East Brighton but it depends on people in the community helping to raise funds.

"It's obvious we will not be able to raise the money for a skate park in every community but we will be able to develop a network of parks accessible to everyone."

Another proposal is to move basic and inaccessible equipment at Black Rock to Carden Avenue in Hollingbury.

As well as fund-raising, council officials will investigate national sources of funding.

Demand for skate parks is increasing but the council says there should be a co-ordinated plan across the city to give access to the maximum number of youngsters.

Under the new plan, parks would cater for all abilities.

Areas would be set aside for younger skaters to develop skills without being intimidated by older skaters.

A series of public consultations will take place with skaters and community groups.
