An artist has added a splash of colour to a pub's smallest rooms - with a water feature and a volcano.

For regulars at the Freemasons Tavern in Western Road, Hove, a trip to the bathroom has become more like a visit to the Loo-vre.

In the gents', a sheet of water, triggered by a sensor on the door, rushes down a glass wall in front of a 10ft-wide image of an erupting volcano.

Visitors to the ladies' are confronted by an underwater scene of a shoal of fish, shot from below to catch a sunburst above.

Scott Francis, 27, trained in fine art sculpture at Southampton Institute of Art and Design before becoming a project manager at Fastsigns in Western Road five years ago.

He put his talents to use to brighten up the toilets after a conversation with pub owner Darcy Gander.

He said: "They were looking for something a bit out of the ordinary and we came up with this idea.

"I went hunting for the right images on the internet and then it was a matter of getting it printed digitally on to vinyl.

"I'm really pleased with the finished result. It's the most unusual project I've worked on here and I hope it will make going to the toilet a memorable occasion, however many drinks people have had."

Mr Gander, who also manages the pub, said: "We had a refurbishment just before Christmas and before then the toilets were quite poor. There was only one ladies' cubicle for both floors and the gents' was a little confined.

"We put a three-storey block on to the back of the building so we could have better facilities.

"Scott is a regular here because Fastsigns is only 100yds down the road. We were chatting about how we could make the loos look funky and interesting and he came up with this.

"In the ladies', we've got a 12ft-wide graphic looking up at a shoal of fish. In the gents', there's a 10ft image of a volcano on the urinal wall.

"It has certainly proved a talking point."
