The body of a woman was discovered in a flat on New Year's Eve.
Police sealed off the area in Bedford Square, Brighton, and inquiries to determine the cause of death were continuing.
Distraught relatives were at the flat and were being comforted by police.
Detective Chief inspector Vic Marshall, head of Brighton CID said: "We have launched an investigation but it is too early to say if it is suspicious."
The woman is believed to be 25 and lived alone.
