It is safe to assume many of the Europhobes and "Little Englanders" who write letters to The Argus would consider Winston Churchill to be one of their best-loved heroes.
They might, then, be surprised to learn Churchill coined the phrase "United States of Europe" in 1930 and argued in favour of the UK's participation in such a union with great vigour during and after the Second World War. He was also in favour of a European army.
As the Europhobes claim those in favour of greater European integration are guilty of treason and betraying those who fought in two world wars, one wonders how happy they are to level this accusation at Churchill himself?
