Chesterfield boss Nicky Law says he was not to blame for the trouble which marred his side's 2-2 draw with Albion at Withdean on Friday.

Sussex Police are investigating verbal exchanges between Law and Albion supporters and a scuffle in the dressing room area after the match.

Law had to have a police escort as he left the pitch and the Chesterfield squad were escorted back to their coach.

Afterwards, Albion boss Peter Taylor called Law "an absolute disgrace," but the Spireites boss has hit back on the club's official web site.

He said: "I never incited the crowd. It was their substitute (Paul Rogers) who got sent off that was more of an incitement than me stood on the side encouraging my team.

"I don't know why Peter Taylor is saying I'm a disgrace. At the end of the game I went to shake his hand, he refused, swore and walked off.

"If that's what he wants to do that's his perogative, I thought he would be bigger and better than that. The problems were because the ground safety is not what it should be.

"You can't have 2-3,000 fans in temporary seating with no barriers stopping them getting onto the pitch. Their supporters were getting to within a few metres of the dugout, it was a scary situation for everyone on the bench."

Chesterfield chairman Ian Yeowart claims assistant manager Ian Banks was hit by an object thrown from the crowd and believes Withdean is not fit to stage league football.

He told the club's web site: "When we equalised the Brighton fans behind the dugout threw various objects at the management team and Ian Banks was hit.

"Withdean Stadium is not fit to stage league football."
