Campaigners against proposals to transfer breast cancer care will question a senior health chief on how he will make his decision.

They have already met with Stuart Welling, the chief executive of Brighton Health Care NHS Trust, to discuss the proposal to move the Nigel Porter Breast Care Unit out of the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, to the Princess Royal Hospital, Haywards Heath.

The unit needs more space to meet government targets and health bosses say there is no site large enough for the next ten years at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

They say the Haywards Heath hospital is the best alternative, as the Brighton trust is merging with the Mid Sussex trust, which runs the Princess Royal.

Campaigners have already organised a meeting with Secretary of State for Health Alan Milburn, in January, backed by the Brighton and Hove MPs.

They are due to meet Alan Bedford, chief executive of East Sussex, Brighton and Hove Health Authority, before the new year.

Brighton and Hove City councillor Jayne Bennett, who is campaigning against the proposal, supported by The Argus campaign Keep Breast Care in Brighton, said: "We look forward to our meeting with Alan Bedford, who we hope will provide answers regarding the way any decision will be made."

Coun Bennett said after recent discussions with Mr Welling, campaigners knew there were sites available at the Royal Sussex, where a new permanent purpose-built unit could be constructed relatively quickly.

Some people are in favour of the unit moving to Haywards Heath but Coun Bennett said: "The promise of a 'centre of excellence' in Haywards Heath is misleading.

"Instead, the service will become fragmented between the two sites as radiotherapy and other multi-disciplinary teams of the oncology centre remain in Brighton."

Campaigners were set to make a presentation to Mr Welling today.
