An award-winning jazz club has found a new home after being forced out of its regular venue.

Brighton Jazz Club faced a crisis after the sudden closure of live music venue The Lift, where it had a Friday night residency during the last seven years.

The Lift, above the City of Brighton pub, in Queens Road, had the plug pulled by new owners CSide, which say it is losing money and not attracting enough custom.

The jazz club bosses were angry after learning of the closure by accident when a regular customer inquired about a ticket for the Christmas gig and found it was cancelled.

The club claimed it was carrying the can for unprofitable events held at the venue on other nights of the week.

Now CSide and the jazz club have reached an amicable understanding about the handling of the closure, blaming it on a breakdown in communication.

John Rowland, a jazz club director, said: "The managing director of CSide was under the impression we were aware of the closure and had made alternative arrangements.

"It was a genuine misunderstanding we have now sorted out. CSide is being very supportive.

"The good news is, we are moving to new premises at the Sussex Arts Club, in Ship Street, in the New Year with a view to reopening on Friday, February 8.

"During the Brighton festival in May, we will be using the Sallis Benney Theatre on Grand Avenue on Saturday evenings."

CSide managing director Lee Simon said the issue of compensation for the jazz club would be sorted out over a few drinks in the new year.

He said: "Unfortunately, there was some sort of misunderstanding but we are helping to support the club in finding a new venue.

"They were good tenants but there was just not enough support to warrant us keeping it open."
