Someone must have had a sense of humour because this supporting actor of the Thirties and Forties was billed as Porter Hall.
His real name was Clifford P Hall and he is famed for shooting Gary Cooper in the back in the great 1936 Western The Plainsman, also starring Jean Arthur.
Initially, Hall toured with a Shakespearian drama company. He was quickly spotted by a Hollywood scout and was always cast as a weak-willed villain.
Hall was yet another of that vast legion that afforded us the escapism we so desperately needed at that time.
