Drinkers will be able to enjoy the atmosphere inside a revolutionary pub without harming the atmosphere outside.

Customers at the Earth and Stars in Church Street, Brighton, can sup a pint of organic ale safe in the knowledge they are not adding to the amount of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

The owners of the former Windsor Tavern promise that from this weekend their establishment will be the world's first pub to have no impact on CO2 levels.

The pub has been bought by pub chain Zel, which enlisted consultants C Level to assess its impact on the environment.

Ben Messer, of C Level, said: "This is the first carbon-balanced pub in the world.

"The electricity for the pub is bought solely from renewable energy suppliers.

"We produced a carbon footprint for the pub, which is the amount of CO2 the pub's activities generate. This is the first step in reducing the emissions.

"The carbon footprint cannot be totally reduced but it can be balanced. You are putting CO2 into the atmosphere but you can balance it with trees."

Mr Messer said C Level was involved with a planting programme in Uganda and the precise number of trees to counterbalance the carbon dioxide emissions from the pub would be planted on its behalf.

He said: "This is something we want the people of Brighton and Hove to really take hold of. We are working towards a larger campaign with other companies such as Zel.

"One day we hope the whole city will be carbon-balanced."

Subject to planning permission, the Earth and Stars will have a solar panel fitted to the roof to heat water.

Jess Neame, a spokeswoman for Zel, said as much of the pub's waste as possible would be recycled.

She said: "The product range will be organically produced, from the lager in the pumps to the spirits in the optics and the food on the bar and the restaurant menus.

"Even the T-shirts worn by the bar staff are organic."

She said there would be few recognisable brands behind the bar but their organic replacements would "blow customers away".
