A multi-million pound housing scheme is set to be approved for a city estate.

The £4.5 million redevelopment scheme will involve replacing old bungalows with new housing.

Brighton and Hove Council is looking at pulling down 29 prefabs in Whitehawk known as The Demountables.

The 10-year-old prefabs are on a site including parts of Sompting Close, Wiston Way, Wiston Road and Whitehawk Way.

A meeting on Monday will be asked to agree that the site should be sold for £750,000 to a housing association.

Housing director Alan McCarthy said the temporary buildings had been useful in providing extra housing but were now unsatisfactory.

Most people wanted to move and the cost of heating was high, sometimes reaching £100 a month in the winter.

Under a scheme being prepared, 36 new homes will be built on the site providing more and better housing.

Solar energy is being considered for the scheme which will reduced fuel bills and consumption.

There will be both rented and shared ownership in the new scheme to be carried out by housing associations.

First priority for the new homes will be for existing residents of the housing and the next priority will be for people in Whitehawk.

The remaining shared ownership lettings will be targeted at key workers while rented flats will be aimed at mature couples currently occupying family housing on the estate.

Mr McCarthy said: "The aim is to create a scheme which people want to move into and see as an improvement in their housing."
