Gastronomes are shunning Brighton's trendy Lanes district for treats off the beaten track, according to a new restaurant guide.
Gingerman, in Norfolk Square, has been voted the best-value restaurant in the city in the annual survey, compiled for Harden's Restaurant Guide.
The eatery is the only place in the city to receive the maximum two stars based on the reports of 10,000 diners.
Chef Ben McKeller has been praised for his "totally superb, imaginative cooking at good-value prices".
But elsewhere, popular favourites come in for criticism in the guide, published this week.
English's in East Street, one of the oldest restaurants in the UK, is dubbed crowded, very expensive with rushed service.
Its stylish neighbour, Havana, in Duke Street, is dubbed "pretentious" with staffing trying "a bit too hard to make it trendy."
Harden's guide, priced £9.99, is available at most bookshops.
