Bognor finished with ten men but still proved too strong for Rugby United as they cruised into the second round after a 4-1 win.

The Rocks were awarded a penalty in the 11th minute when Richard Hudson found Matt Russell and Jamie Howell sent home keeper Paul Shepherd the wrong way from the spot.

The home side rarely threatened the Bognor rearguard until Steve Padmore rifled over the top of an empty net just before half-time. Bognor punished that miss after 48 minutes when David Wright powerfully headed home a swirling Guy Rutherford cross.

Substitute Simon Funnell, who replaced Russell, made it three in the 58th minute with a neat chip following a defensive mix-up and he got Bognor's fourth in the 65th minute when he curled a free kick from just outside the box into the top corner.

Bognor's day was marred when Jodey Rowland instinctively blocked a shot on the line with his hand and Paul O'Brien gave the home side consolation from the penalty spot.

Boss Jack Pearce said "It was a shame to lose Jodey, but that's what happens in this game when you appear to be in control. The only cause for concern at the moment is the amount of injuries we have."

St Leonards tumbled out after Carshalton Athletic ripped their defence to pieces on the way to a 5-1 win at Colston Avenue.

Saints started well enough but fell behind after 21 minutes when Gary Elliot met Stuart Massey's free kick with a diving header.

The visitors pulled the game level almost immediately after half time when Danny Fletcher's low corner went straight into the net, possibly with a deflection from a Carlshalton defender.

But just two minutes later the hosts were back in front. Bryon Glasgow outsprinted the defence and shot past keeper John Odlum who failed to close him down in time. Denver McKenzie added to the misery when he ran into space in the left of the box and made it 3-1 in the 67th minute.

Tony Cornelius had a blatant penalty shout waved away and was a victim of poor decisions throughout the match.

Saints may have felt aggrieved when their penalty claim was dismissed but they were outraged when Hegley fell to the ground after the slightest of touches to win the hosts a spot kick which he duly converted.

Substitute Kevin Lock capitalised on the sluggish visiting defence with a pacey breakaway goal.

After the euphoria of their FA Cup victory Lewes returned to earth with a bump after they went down 2-1 at home to second division leaders East Thurrock.

Lewes goalkeeper Ross Standen saved well to deny Keith Wilson on 18 minutes but 60 seconds later Danny Curran got himself goal side of the home defence and finished well with a low shot.

Ten minutes before half time it was 2-0 when Paul Pizzey saw his 25 yard strike take a deflection off a defender and deceived Standen.

Lewes were much improved in the dxsecond hallf but having already used their three substitutes they were reduced to ten men on 65 minutes when Paul Thomsett was stretchered off with ligament damage.

Seventeen minutes from time Andy Johnson curlked a free kick around the defensive wall to give them hope.

Horsham produced one of their best displays of the season as high-flying Berkhamsted were beaten 3-0 at Queen Street.

They went ahead in the 44th minute after Stuart Hardy's mazy dribble was ended by Kevin Franklin's foul in the box.

Hardy converted the penalty and Gary Charman made it 2-0 in stoppage time after good work by Jamie Taylor.

Taylor beat the offside trap to coolly run on and slot the ball past keeper Sean O'Connor to make the game safe in the 63rd minute.

Boss John Maggs said: "That was our best performance of the season. I told the lads I needed more aggression, more determination and more hard work and they were superb."
