Sussex churches have been put on alert as a new crimewave sweeps the county.
Thieves are breaking into Anglican churches and stealing the lead lining from christening fonts.
It is thought the dome-shaped baptism baths are then used as flowerpots.
But vicars say they cost hundreds of pounds to replace.
One said: "While the lead itself is not particularly valuable it seems they make rather attractive garden flower containers and can be passed on at quite a sum.
"We are always vigilant about the care of our buildings and their contents but a font liner is not something we would usually think of."
